Bear the Beeman
eMail: BeartheBeeman@gmail.com
Bear has hives across the local area and produces all the honey he sells. This is 100% honey and 100% local. The hives are managed so flavors are not mixed through the season. Taste the difference true local honey makes.
- Spring Garden honey comes from Pittsylvania county almost to Halifax where the delicious cantaloupes and watermelons come from.
- Reed Creek honey hives are near Basset in Henry county, where Bear uses a remote beeyard once used by the late Bill Hartis, one of the big names in sourwood honey production. The Reed Creek honey is produced in spring and fall. It is available two ways: jars marked PS are the purest sourwood and those marked SF are sourwood and friends honey in June and July.
- Naked Creek in Amherst county is off Rt 151 and encompasses hives on Bear's property.
- Grandma's Hill north of Amherst near the Nelson County line
- Catch Can is a blend of Bear's honeys

Woodson's Mill
https://www.deeprootsmilling.com/the-mill
Deep Roots Milling operates out of historic Woodson’s Mill in Nelson County VA. Woodson’s Mill was originally built in the 1790’s and has been in continual operation throughout the majority of its history. For much of America’s history, mills like Woodson’s dotted the landscape and served vital community roles. However, with the commercialization of the modern food system, these country mills could not compete and most were abandoned and left to fall apart. Woodson’s Mill is one of the last of these gems and we are excited to give it new life.
Our Grains and Their Farmers
Bloody Butcher Corn
an heirloom variety of dent corn that has been grown in Appalachia since at least as early as the mid-1800s. its exact origins are unknown, but it was also grown in Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Small family farms have been diligently saving its seed generation after generation. It is prized for its distinctive beautiful color and unique flavor. Our current crop is blended from corn grown by Daniel Austin in Franklin county, VA; Sam Hart in King and Queen county, VA; Bob McDonald in Bedford county, PA
Cateto Orange Corn
an heirloom variety of flint corn, originally hailing from South America. Traces of its genetics are found in many commonly grown modern varieties of maize today. While popularly grown in Argentina and Brazil in the late 1800s, a version of it made its way to Cuba in the early 1900s, where it became known as Maiz Argentino or Especial. Our current crop is grown by Bob McDonald in Bedford county, PA
Soft White Winter Wheat
The "gold" is finely ground, high extraction (85%) pastry flour and The "silver" is a finely ground, medium extraction (70%) pastry flour, stone-milled from a variety of soft white winter wheat specially bred for our region.
Our current crop is grown by the Sachs family in Westmoreland county, VA
Hard Red Winter Wheat
The "gold" is finely ground, high extraction (95%) bread flour and the "silver" is a finely ground, medium extraction (80%) bread flour, stone-milled from a variety of hard red winter wheat, known as NuEast, that was specially bred for our region. Our current crop is grown by Daniel Austin in Franklin county, VA
Turkey Red Heirloom Wheat
The mother of midwest wheat, it was brought to this country from Ukraine by German Anabaptists in the 19th century and has spawned many of the hard red wheat varieties grown today. It’s thin bran layer is ideal for stone-milling and it makes an extremely versatile flour that has a subtle but distinct aroma and flavor. Our current crop is grown by Daniel Austin in Franklin county, VA
Wren’s Abruzzi Heirloom Rye
Bred from the seed that was cultivated by Jesuit monks in the apennine foothills a millennium ago, it remains one of the hardiest small grains around. This is a relatively soft winter rye that excels in biscuits and pastries but is also suitable for all manner of artisan breads, lending a “spicy” flavor characteristic of southern ryes. Our current crop is grown by William Hale in Louisa county, VA
