A grassroots group has taken the initiative to save a historic structure in the heart of Amherst, VA, and to repurpose it as a creative community center. Located in the middle of a vibrant village, the goal is to provide a gathering place for public events such as performances, meetings, classes and workshops, community forums, and a farmers' market. The ultimate dream is to provide studios and office spaces for rent.
Have you ever thought or heard anyone else say,
"If only Amherst had ...
... a place for young people to go after school and weekends?"
... a creative arts space?"
... a farmers' market?"
... a community center?"
... a place to take or teach classes?"
... a music venue?"
... a theater?"
... a place to rent a studio or office?"
... a community art gallery?"
... a distinctively, preserved historic building?"
So have we!
The old Amherst Baptist Church, the turn-of-the-last-century building that was the home of that congregation until 2005. Amherst County, the current owner of the building, has given this grassroots effort permission to study the feasibility of this renovation project. During that time we have been allowed to offer several performances and presentations to gather input about the community needs that can be met by such a facility.
