WHAT WE'RE DOING
We recognize the importance of building relationships with our community.
Over the past few years, Second Stage has helped hundreds of families in and around Amherst County. In 2018, with a grant from Centra Foundation, we helped children learn about good nutrition through our Movies on the Menu program. Children came to Second Stage on five consecutive Saturday mornings to see a movie with a food-based theme, such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Ratatouille. Following the movie, we fed a nourishing lunch related to the movie. We then sent the kids home with the recipe and ingredients to make the dish at home with their families. In 2019, with another grant from Centra Foundation, we created Second Helping as a way to help our neighbors who might not have access to fresh food. At the end of the day of the weekly Farmers Market, we purchase food that our vendors have remaining and then distributed that food through food pantries including Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Blue Ledge Meals on Wheels and the New Prospect Baptist Church Food Bank Ministry. This not only helped the recipients of the fresh food, it also put extra money in the pockets of our local farmers, growers, and makers. The Second Helping Program was awarded an $11,200 grant from the Amherst County Economic Development Agency (EDA) in 2020. In addition to a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation earlier this season and donations from local businesses and individuals, the EDA grant helped ensure the continuation of the program through the end of the 2020 market season. Centra blessed us with another $11,500 grant to continue the efforts of Second Helping through our farmers markets in 2022. We are also utilizing programs that enable us to assist with SNAP/EBT matching. Our community outreach isn't limited to specific events. Second Stage is also home to small businesses and the Amherst location of Baine's Books & Coffee. Our affordable rent and reliable internet make it a great place to gather. We also have rental space for special events, so consider us for your next birthday party, business meeting, fundraiser, or wedding. We are hosts for many events, including films, art programs, concerts, music lessons, and more! We hope you'll support us. Together, we can do great things! |
